What About Installation? A mantel can be installed long after the completion of the house, but certainly not before the drywall, fireplace and hearth are completed. With a little ingenuity a mantel can be installed on almost any surface. If you are replacing an existing mantel or surround molding, simply remove it and carefully pull back the baseboard to meet the sides of the mantel.
Usually we drill pilot holes through the mantel shelf and bottom of the
legs, and then toenail the mantel into the wall studs and plate. Where
there is a problem finding a solid surface to nail to, simply cut blocking
that will fit inside the mantel frame, glue and fasten it to the wall
(using toggle bolts if necessary) and then nail through the sides of the
frame into the blocking. A narrow bead of construction adhesive or
caulking will help close any small gaps and hold the mantel securely to the
wall.We provide enough material in the frame to allow adjustment in case of an irregular wall surface. Use a hand plane or a belt sander to remove enough material to get a close fit to the wall. A small molding is provided to close any gaps between the mantel opening and the material surrounding the fireplace opening. |
